Bill Barlow – Gonna Fly
Feel the pedal shift from the floorboard the moment you hear this lick. You might not have heard of Bill Barlow, but he’s skyrocketing Out of Obscurity. His latest album release propels him into starlight as one of the great indie composers and performers of our time. Suave vocals, a groove that keeps you begging for more and a collection that is criminally well put together come your way like a freight train, and you’re welcoming every horsepower of it. Gonna Fly has that bluesy crisp recognition that has a build and intro section that is a verse from a passage of poetry and immediately after a blues thunderstorm. He’s going to have DMs for that guitar tone and production for years to come. No notes, Bill; I’m here to take some actually:
Matt Deangelis-In This World
This mystic masquerader has been able to fling fairy dust on music like he owns a production house for the same. Matt has been playing music since the age of 8, and the finesse in his composition and performances definitely shows. If your mind is a canvas, he’s ready to dance the most incredible realism blended with positivity into all his music. In This World begins like a ballad, just the heavenly piano with soft percussion lacing the track. Matt’s voice is commanding, yet it harmonises with what plays in the verse like the Eye of God. This might just be a brilliant songwriter at the piano with instrumental excellence shining through, but feel how refreshing it is. We might not know much about this world, but a musician like Matt Deangelis is in it:
Das Sporten-Just a Dog
If one thing makes me glad about listening to this music, is the wide range of goosebumps I get when I hear a promising act. Das Sporten has an album from 2024 called The Dog’s Half Dead and has released a live album called Evil Sensei recently. In the supposed 2-year vacuum, you see, Das Sporten has collected enough for us to hear. Just a Dog begins like a classic The Strokes song but has a rhythm section that plays with the notions of punk. The vocals stand out, are in an easy-speak manner but have a storytelling aesthetic to it. The moment we drizzle onto the verse, the vocals magically appear in tune and revel at the thought of the dog. I especially enjoyed the harmonies bringing out quite the texture from the groovy instrumental rhythm. I might be a dog, but this music is my lead:
