Yellow Dog Conspiracy-March
Leave the windows open, you're going to hear a riot. Your neighbours should do. Yellow Dog Conspiracy is an incredible Portuguese rock band from Lisbon, formed in 2013. As much as this latest track has them rocking our socks off, the band have a range as diverse as their taste in music, and they're sure to serve up a cocktail of epic proportions every single time. March starts with radio feedback, overlapping news chatter, and a thunderous riff and drum approach that stops you in your tracks. Close to the first 20 seconds of the song, build up to explosive voltage getting generated. Vice whispers the vocals to you with a hush of secrets untold. A steady heartbeat keeps you locked in on the song, teasing a dynamite switch in your sights but out of reach. Old school rock sensibilities with the finesse of the modern. This is rock your kids should listen to:
Blenko-Unwanted Guest
Bass-led songs are not everyone's cup of tea. It strips down the musician to their biggest strength and might expose any weaknesses almost instantaneously. Blenko is the project of Rebecca Simmonds, the bassist of the band Anna's Bones. The lyrics and softer instrumental background of her latest song, "Unwanted Guests," are biting. They're pity-acerbic, have dense imagery, and take you on a journey where you're waiting for the next line to hear the implosion. After the 30-second mark, you hear the first reverberating string complementing Rebecca's sudden vocal lift. It builds with a passionate energy like the climax of a TV show that you're going to get obsessed with just after the pilot. By stripping down the instrumentals and choosing a minimal palette for how the melodies develop, Blenko becomes a project where Simmonds can play to her strengths. Without a doubt, there are many:
Kev Adkins-Last Life
It's always exciting to hear a refreshing independent artist make their debut. There is a lot of heart and soul in it and, in this case, a very unique and expressive instrument. Kev Adkins might not be a name you've heard before, but you can definitely bet on it. The last time I ever heard a banjo album was Steve Martin's (only because I know him through his comedy). Kev Adkins blends his independent songwriting style with a rock spine as the banjo trickles and weaves through the very DNA of the song. His vocals are determined yet soothing and pleasing in the way he delivers the lyrics and narrates this passionate story. Knowing his style, Adkins has had his Franklin Gotham bandmates Jarrett Nicolay and Brittany Valint sprinkle magic on this track to make it a memorable stay on our playlist. Almost like you’ve heard and known this song from a past life:
