James Darcy-Before it's time to leave
You can never really tell how to put distance into words. James Darcy knows how to do it with the poetry of music. Before it's time to leave echoes with longing, constructing a bridge made of memories. Your sense of time is lapsed just by omitting the percussion in this piece. Reverberating piano notes walk beside James' vocals as his lyrics spill tears as though they were written with his soul on paper. Naming artists like Noah Gundersen, Jason Isbell, and Daughtry as inspiration, James Darcy knows it's just a matter of time until it's time. Leaving isn't just a departure from a place. It can mean memory or even a new destination. His descriptive lyrics don't let you wander away to another path but rather bring you closer to the vision in his head. Listen to these melodies that will make you want to stay:
Decadent Heroes-Minutes Away
Decadent Heroes might as well name their guitar the Interstate, for they always know how to take us on a journey. Luigi Chiappini has used this project to not just express himself but also his admiration for some of the greatest guitar legends in the world. From his latest album Climax, this track is called "Minutes Away". It shows stellar virtuosic instrumental writing that is somehow able to convey an image far greater than any lyrics could. Minutes away holds a steady beat and tempo but trades licks the way an expressive opera singer would on stage. His understanding of the fretboard and how to weave between the compositions is something that is ethereal and allows time to flow by effortlessly. Minutes Away makes you remember the distance yet long for home:
Caligula-Alone
This blend of rock, new wave, and post-grunge is a cocktail I would choose on any given Sunday. Caligula come from an early 90s-era Sydney but aren't afraid to blend contemporary motifs into their music. From their latest album "Bloodlines", "Alone" opens a door to some incredibly unique baroque melodic elements. Like The Edge’s guitar work, there is a layered rhythmic expression that is heard from the guitar and drums. It is a darker palette of what INXS would have used. The production work is incredibly good, allowing you to hear every single detail of how the background is building. The chorus sounds like a fusion of the 80s moving into the 90s. Alone is a song that builds like your favourite synthwave track as the lights start blurring and your only favourite company is you:
