Televised Minds- Rumours
Most songs speak for themselves, but sometimes you've got to spread the rumours. Televised Minds have always had unbridled energy, and they know how to put it in the right place. This is punk that is left half rustic and half polished, just the way your TV shows used to be. Rumours uses a fun, peppy tempo and builds on lyrics that are instant hooks. It's no wonder that radios like BVC want to play their songs over and over. I found myself humming the guitar lead from the verse repeatedly. When the punchy chord progressions are absent, the groovy bass line struts in. Simplicity is key here. The band does not flood us with ambiances borrowed from other worlds. I've heard they are a pretty incredible band, and that's not just a rumor:
Mark Andrew Hansen- You Come to Me
It's been ages since I've heard a good ballad. Using a minimal setup of a single instrument and his powerful voice, this is where the lyrics come to shine. Every gentle vibrato, every pause he takes, is intentional. As the emotions build, the instruments come in, creating that perfect, stirring drama. Using the piano as an interlude within the song, Mark and Andrew Hansen is able to fabricate poetry out of thin air. From just a strumming guitar, Mark builds this song like the romantic tension between two characters. This is beautiful music coming from someone who has been able to understand not just nature but human nature. With an instrumental section that could go on repeat forever, "You Come to Me" becomes the kind of romantic song you would play for your partner:
Prem Byrne-Orion
I remember listening to Prem Bern play three words describing the loving but complex relationship with his father. Orion changes the melodic texture so much that you are left impressed at how versatile a musician Prem can be. If you were on earth, he sends you gently into the stratosphere with the instrumental opening of the track. Like a celestial ladder, you climb the notes as though they were stepping stones on the stars. If you've always felt like you need a homing beacon or a star to guide you home, this is the Orion that Prem is talking about. It is strange how humans have given so much gravity to something that doesn't even stay here on Earth. These are the kinds of symbolism you expect to hear from a seasoned songwriter. It's written in the stars that Prem will always deliver:
